How Sports Betting Fits Into Modern Sports Fandom

Modern sports fandom blends digital innovation with physical experiences. Sports betting has become a major part of this rich tapestry.

Being a sports fan is no longer about simply tuning in to the television and settling down for a few hours in your favourite armchair. Nor is it about visiting a game or two in the season. Those facets are just one part of the global, digital entertainment revolution. You are just as likely to find your favourite teams and stars in Netflix documentaries and video games as you are actually playing on the field. Sports betting has also become a part of this experience.

Sports fandom beyond watching alone

The world of sports betting is another way fans have begun to engage with their favourite teams. By looking at odds, people can see how others view the team, who are favourites and who are underdogs, then make decisions about possible outcomes. Others use a sports bet for its live in-game statistics, trying to gain knowledge on if and when games will pivot or change course.

All of these forms of fandom have begun to overlap. This creates a multi-layered approach, all the while increasing the brand potential and revenue streams of your favourite teams.

Participation reaches a broader audience

According to data supplied by the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association (FSGA), around 31% of U.S. adults participated in sports betting or fantasy sports in 2026. This placed it at around 82.8 million people, a figure that was up from the previous year by 29%.

Sports betting and fantasy sports are quite different, though they do have overlap. When people make a sports bet, they are placing a wager on an outcome of an event, such as a tournament or match. Fantasy sports instead allow people to create a team, and the outcomes are based on the performance of this combined squad or the individuals they have chosen.

That data also showed that prediction markets, a newcomer in the betting sphere, are still kept at arm’s length and very much misunderstood. Around 88% of those who bet are aware of them, but only 54% say they are really familiar with them. They are also only used by around 7%, and 94% of these are already using sports betting.

Prediction markets differ once again. They allow people to buy a share in the possibility of an event taking place. This can rise and fall in value. In this way, it flirts with the boundaries between a bet and trading.

Live games become a focal point

Where sports betting really seems to be enhancing the experience is during live games, particularly with the addition of in-play betting. By viewing a game and having the means to make predictions in real time, it adds an additional active layer to the sports betting experience.

In-play betting provides the ability to bet as a game is taking place. As scores and the tide change, so will the odds. Many platforms even combine them with cash-out features, so you can take out your bet early at reduced odds.

A recent study by St. Bonaventure University and Siena Research Institute found that 89% of U.S. bettors said sports betting increased their interest in watching games live. Don Levy, the SRI’s director added that “Since we began asking respondents about online sports betting in 2024, there has been a steady rise in those who say they have an active account – from about 1 in 5 to now 1 in 4 – and the share of respondents who bet on these platforms has grown just as much – from 17% of Americans in 2024 to 22% in 2026.”

Research shapes the fan experience

All of these different ways to bet can drastically alter the routine of fans in the run-up to a match, including their betting routine. This may start with research on player and team information. Part of this may be experience and knowledge already gleaned. The rest may come from news outlets, social media, and transfer rumors.

Those who really want to dig into statistics have plenty of places to do so. Websites are full of stats, unearthing how teams work under certain pressures, how they typically fare against their given opponents, or with home and away advantages or disadvantages. This research-oriented engagement is very different from simply following final scores in the headlines. It is almost akin to that expected of back room staff.

This data shows that contrary to the ads and news headlines, sports betting remains king. Fantasy sports ads are splashed around daily, while prediction markets make headlines. Yet the general sports fan in the United States is using betting as their primary methodology.

One reason for this is to add more excitement to a game. By utilising betting, looking at odds and possibilities, sports in the US are having an extra layer added to them. They are now part of the fan experience, adding to the action on and off the field.
